Appeal Jury Verdict in CA

I read this a few minutes ago and thought I would share it, since it is important to be informed.

Jehovah’s Witnesses to appeal jury verdict in California case

NEW YORK—Jehovah’s Witnesses will appeal the decision of a California jury in a court case involving alleged acts of child abuse.
The jury rendered a multimillion-dollar damage award to a woman who claimed that she was molested as a child by a member of a local congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. At trial, the plaintiff claimed that the policies of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society contributed to the alleged abuse. “We respectfully disagree with the jury’s decision. This is the first time that an organization was found responsible for the alleged misdeeds of a member who held no position of leadership or authority,” states James McCabe, an attorney representing Watchtower in the case. “We are very sorry for whatever harm this young lady may have suffered. However, the organization is not responsible. We now look to the Court of Appeals for a thorough review of this case.”
J. R. Brown, a spokesman at the world headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses, commented: “The fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses abhor child abuse and strive to protect children from such acts is well-known. The individual members of any organization must ultimately bear the responsibility for their own actions, particularly when the acts are so flagrantly against the morals and principles of the organization and society.”

At the Villao KH.
Josias, Joel, Jackeline, Me, Jennifer and Carol

Oh, this was like 2 weeks ago too. I had several kids come over to study the WT in English
and several did comment for the meeting. I hope to do it again for the next meeting.

I havent been able to write for over a week! I have wanted to, but being away from a computer and Internet once again has prevented me.

Last Friday we had an Anniversary party at our house downstairs. We danced and ate rice with chicken. It was fun and I took pictures, of which I have to share.

On Saturday and Sunday my brother and I were invited to go to Villao with the family across the street. The other two girl cousins also joined making the group a total of 8. Villao is farther than the towns we go to on Monday, so it was a long drive. We drove through the mountains and had some fog on the way. There was so much vegetation. It was green everywhere. I would like to give you a detailed description of how the whole trip went, but I dont have the time right now. Anyways, we spent the night with the Rodriguez's relatives. The next morning we went to the meeting there and later that afternoon we swam in a river. It was awesome. I also caught a few frogs, and named one Risa. She was smaller than my pinky fingernail. We drove back home after 4pm and sang on the way. Some others slept and I also drew. We arrived around 10pm.

Since Tuesday Ive been going out preaching and joined the Quichua group twice. It hasnt been on purpose, but its turned out that way. Tonight we might go to the Muey congregations meeting.

I know this is brief, but at least you guys know we are still here and doing fine. :)
Ziv is a little sick though.

Bueno, Take Care!

The month is almost over!

Been busy. My mom has been doing so much for the family since we got here. She travels everyday to Santa Elena and is doing business errands. Its a lot of walking! She takes advantage of that time to informal witness, and I know she is getting better at it.

On Saturday, on my way home from the Cyber after I had finished my last post, I had an animal encounter of the wild kind. :P
As I was approaching my home, I saw my aunt standing outside talking with my mom. They were about to go for me at the cyber which is about 1 long block away from our house, but instead waited for me once they saw me walking towards them. Well.......Unbeknown to us a small bird was flying around us trying to look for a place to land. I suddenly felt a semi heavy object land on my back. As I reached behind to flick it off, it landed on my hand too. I felt claws on my hand and then some scratches as I started to wave my arms. The perpetrator turned out to be a falcon or a lechusa. It was small compared to an adult sized bird. I still freaked out. Then about 2 minutes later I saw it flying towards me again! I ran into the house and didnt want to go out the rest of the afternoon. :P

My aunt, mom, and brother joined me this Monday to the pueblos in Guangala and Manantiales de Guanagala. I took many pictures, but I dont have my camera with me so you will have to wait for those pictures. It was a very succesful morning and I spoke with about 3 different persons. Later we headed to another area of Guangala. There my mom got bit by a small, sly dog. It didnt tear any meat, but it did wound her leg and make it bleed. We took her to a doctor where she got it disinfected. They didnt want to give her shots since they supposedly knew the dog she had described. Our day continued without any other animal encounter and my mom was able to continue walking, though it did hurt. It is still bruised and injured, and she had no symptoms of disease. Still, we want her to go to another doctor.

We all have been busy individually. My aunt goes off to Quichua and does her thing there. My grandparents either stay home or go to Santa Elena to preach in their congregations territory. My mom is super busy with errands in Santa Elena and shes constantly coming and going. My brother and I stay here in Salinas and go out preaching a lot. We also like to walk at the Boardwalk in the evenings with our neighbors.

Tomorrow Ill do some calls around the area and I hope Im able to count a few as studies.

This weekend my brother and I have been invited to go with some brothers and sisters ( our neighbors) to Billao. Its another town far out somewhere. I want to go!!

Well....I know I am brief but I had some pleasant conversations with several friends through Skype. If you have Skype this is my username: iamizmir

Guess what! I just preached to a man here who is form Tampa, Florida named Dan. He accepted the magazines and asked for where we met. Sadly, I dont really know how to give direction yet. I told him I am a Jehovah{s Witness and that we met at the Kingdom Hall. He then told me that he frankly doesnt want anythign to do with them. I said that was fine, but he could still keep the maagzines since the theme might be something thaty interested him. Religion and Policits. He said sure..

K...I am off now. Please tell others that my blogs website name has changed and is now izmirstravels.blogspot.com

Big Hugs!!!!!!!!

Hey!!

I am at a cyber again sharing with you my latest dealings here... :)

One thing I have noticed that is different here from the US or Mexico are the keyboards. Its complicated learning how to use them. I often misspell words and wrong grammar appears in my typing. Excuse me if that occurs!

Something else regarding hygiene in many woman and girls is the lack of shaving. Im not accustomed to seeing girls my age with unshaven underarms. Its very usual to see that, and I am not used to it yet. I dont think I ever will be, but well, its their prerogative.A weird one.

Another little fact about here is the meaning of some words that in Mexico have a different meaning. Or just in the west have a different definition.

For example, torta. TORTA. What do you think of? In Mexico a torta is almost like a sandwich. Made up of a birote split in half with ham or a meat of your preference inside, with lettuce, mayo, avocado, onions, tomatoes, etc. Here in Ecuador, a torta is a cake! Like a chocolate or vanilla cake.
Tostada also has a different meaning here. It is a grilled cheese. Yep!

Anyways, what have I been up to!

I joined my mom on Wednsday to Santa Elena while she did lots of errands for the family. Shes been so busy since we got here and she is travelling a lot everyday. I also have been going out in service and visiting people I met the last few weeks. I finally have one set study!! Ill have to pass him on though. I have two other calls that are consistent, but I cant count it yet. Yesterday I visited an older man and only shared scriptures with him. Im trying to focus my message on Jah´s Kingdom and only using the Bible. The majority of the people here know Jehovahs name and they think that is enough, so I also have been making use of this months article in pages 16 and 17.

Yesterday I went to a small literature table we have on the Malecon with literature in various languages displayed. I was with the Munoz couple and they are from the Domincan Republic but have been serving here since the mid 90s. I saw several persons who spoke English but none stopped. Two ladies picked up books and two other men stopped looking at the literature. After being there almost two hours I had dinner with the Munoz´ at their home. Some of us went to watch Madagascar 3 afterwards.

Today I went out in service and worked with a sister named Manuela who is raising her granddaughter. She has taught her 4 year old granddaughter Kingdom Melodies and many scriptures. Shes memorized over 10 texts and knows another 6 songs. Its impressive. She even preached 3 times to different househoders! She would introduce herself and ask for their name. Then she´d ask if they wanted ot live in Paradise. Regardless of their answer shed say, ´You have to read the Bible.´and then she´d place a tract with them and whoever was with her would take over. It was lovely to see her!

The rest of my family has been well. My aunt is a little sick and my grandmothers legs ache, but they´re persevering. My aunt went to a Playas, a town a few hours away, to preach in Quichua yesterday and she had success! She placed 5 magazines to 5 different people who spoke Quichua. I think its impressive to hear of her hard studying giving fruit.

Tonight we have our Spanish meeting and tomorrow is the English groups meeting. Im excited for it! It will be my third meeting. Since last Sunday we had a group of kids come over to study for the Watchtower in English, I cant wait to see if they comment!

Winter will soon start here. It doesnt seem like it though, since it still is very humid and its not freezing and pouring.

Thats pretty much it! I could explain more, but I have to go....

I miss you guys!

Write to me please!!!!!!!!!!

Service Pictures

Territory in Santa Elena, similar to Mexico.

My mother is talking with some sisters.

Me!!! Everyone has really liked my umbrella. Like REALLY.

After lunch with the D.O. and C.O. The Breuers are the couple to the right and the Tapias are the couple in the middle.

Sucursal.

My whole family and I went to Bethel today. We arrived around 9:45 and were able to have a tour around 10. The sister who toured us turned out to be the same sister I had met 6 years ago in my first tour to the Ecuador Branch. She is now working in the Literature Department and her husband is in the Service Department. They are Jeff and Toni Toth, both from the US and have been here since their mid 20s. They are Gilead graduates and have also served as Circuit Overseers in the country. I really enjoyed meeting her and her husband. I was encouraged by their experience in the ocountry and also by their example in the ministry. They have been used in several facets of the ministry and It made me feel confident about the posibilities I have available.

Through out the morning I met several brothers and sisters who have known my grandparents for years. They would start to walk by, but then they would recognize eachother and stop and greet us. One of them was Br. Tamayo who is in the Branch Commitee and also in oversight of the Translation Dpt. I learned that Ecuador translates to 6 languages, some of which are Indigenous Languages like Shuar and Quichua. Quichua has 4 different variations of it, depending on the part of the country.

We also had lunch with a childhood friend of my aunt, who is know serving in the Branch. It was so yummy!! Camaron and spaghetti! Shrimp.

I got lots of literature! Books in Spanish that I didnt bring from Mexico and some magazines in English.

Later, after Bethel, we went to another town to go to a Funeral. Yesterday we found out while shopping that a brother my gramps knew had died the night before. We went to share our condolences.

After that we went to Ancon to see where it is my grandfather was born and raised. I saw the house where he was born!!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow we have service and I need to pick up glasses.

I also met some cousins yesterday and saw an uncle today.

Hope youre all good!!

6.08.2012

Today my grandparents, mom and I went out preaching. I had a nice 20 minute conversation with an older man and we talked about the Kingdom of God. I read Matthew 6:9,10 and Psalms 45:6.
Later in the day my brother caught a freaky spider. You can see a picture of it below. In the afternoon I joined a sister at one of her studies, and then did a call of mine. The young boy was home and we spoke about the Awake articles. Tonight we went to an Anniversary party for several couples in our hall. Some celebrate 18 years, while others up to 29! Tomorrow we will go visit Christian!

Common things you see here...

Im not using my computer at this moment, so I dont have more pictures to show but these two. I am going to add more pictures of whats common here on this same post soon.
Morocho is a hot drink that is similar to Avena or Oats. Its like Champurrado. My aunt is a fan, but I still havent tried  in this trip.

This is a sign I saw while in Santa Elena.

We first went to the smallest town of the two, Guangala. I joined Anabell on two of her studies, helped her start another and preached to those walking by. At the first study we read the 'Listen to God' brochure with an older, mature woman. She told us that her granddaughter had died the week before. Her granddaughter had suffered some vomiting and other symptoms which killed her from one day to the other. I thought it was terrible having her tell us this. We immediately took her to the Bible hope for our dead loved ones. She didnt react much to what we read, but at least she knows what Jah has promised. After reading two pages with her from the brochure we went to see another call. This young girl of about 13 turned out to be the sister of the girl who had died. She told us her sister was 17 and they had buried her the day before. We again shared with her John 5:28,29 and then lead her to the Chapter on the Resurrection in the BT book. She allowed us to go back in two weeks. Later that morning we also had a study with the cousin of the girl who had died. The whole little pueblo seems to be related somehow. Fernando said that they marry young in that pueblo and in between bcousins. Its interesting. :)
Around 11:30 we went to Manatiales and none of Anabell's studies studied. I preached informally to several people and others outside of their homes. I promised to visit them in two weeks and hopefully I can start my own studies with them. Around 3 we drove to a dam in the area and bought mandarins on the way. I saw cows, goats, sheep, lots of pigs and turkeys on the side of the road. The scenery is so pretty. We arrived home around 5pm and Jacqueline invited me for dinner.

Tuesday morning my mom, Ziv and I went out in service. Ziv stayed at the meeting for field service, but my mom and I just headed to our calls since we had limited time yesterday. We walked to my first call and didnt find her home, but spoke with her brother. I honestly didnt want to preach to her brother, but I thought, 'Ok the worst thing he could say is no, and if he says yes to my reading a scripture, then go for it!'  Well, when I asked if I could read him a scrupture, he said yes. I thought, 'Ok then, lets do it!' I began sharing with him the intro I had used with his sister the week before, but once I asked him one question on his viewpoint regarding John 6:15 he talked and talked. I thought thats was good, but we soon had to change our topic of conversation and start sharing other scriptures with him. He mentioned how he used to go to a Christian Church for one year, but longer does. He really likes learning about God and talking about it with others who share his high regard for it. He also said he thinks his mother and sister need this message to help them. This man is very observant and examines what he hears and sees. He told us that he notices how as a whole, mankind is becoming very selfish and egotistical. He dislikes the way it sometimes shows in him, but he tries to be different. He also said that people are loosing faith in whats good and in God. We read Proverbs 3:5,6 and told him how Jah is the perfect instructor and how he is the best to ask for guidance. He knows how to lead us. Christian, we learned his name to be, agreed and said that what we put in our heart can lead us to making decisions. He then said he wanted to share something that not any person would understand or share the same criteria as he. It was regarding something he noticed with his pastor that made him uncomfortable, but he also wanted to know that if his thinking was wrong to correct him. He began by stating how during a time he didnt have a job and the pastor at church knew about his situation. So one day the pastor comes up to him and tells him that since Christian had such an easiness with words and good persuasion he could work for the pastor at church. The pastor said he would have a good wage and that since more people would be interested due to his persuasion, that would bring more tithe and therefore more money. Christian told us that he was shocked and didnt know how to respond to the pastor. The pastor continued saying, 'Christian, look at me, I have a house, two cars, and my clothes are all nice. You dont have to worry about any more money issues..You'll get good pay!' Well, this made him feel so strange would think about his offer. Christian asked us if how he felt was ok, or what we thought about what happened. I thought that it was awesome to hear what Christian was telling us and asking us about this. We read Matt 10:8,9 and I told him to notice the instructions Jesus gave his disciples. Jesus gave them the responsibility to help and cure others, but never to ask for a wage or material gain. Jesus himself never asked for money. After talking a bit about this, he invited us into his patio to sit on a bench and table. My mom asked him to bring out his Bible and he did. We further spoke about this because he still wasnt sure of the money issue. Oh, and he also told us of how people in church dont always have enough for the tithe and they feel anxious about the end of  the month. What the pastor does is call the people to the front of the room to pay, and if you dont stand up, then everyone would know you didnt have enough to pay. They even marginate them. So my mom lead him to the account of the Widow and he read it. My mom explained that she gave because that is what she desired and could give. What mattered was her appreciation for Jah and the motive. She also wasnt humiliated because of the amount she gave. Likewise, we donate from our heart, when we can and are never humiliated. Then we read Matt 6:31-34 because it is what we live by. We ourselves are volunteers and dont get paid, so we have to work to be self sufficient. He was admired. He kept talking and then shared an anecdote with us. He really thinks and analyzes everything. He is a fast thinker. We were trying to finish the conversation since my mom and I still had to go to the market, but then I chose to ask him one final question. Why did he stop going to the Chirstian Church? He said it was because of his work schedule,  but that he has  gone to church and another one sometimes. Then he asked us about our meeting schedules, and since we had a meeting that evening he said he'd come. I believed him though, in contrast to others who say they will go, but dont. Anyways, we left him the June magazines and set a time for Saturday. I felt very good about the whole conversation. My mom was also a great help, so I appreciate her joining me yesterday.

SOOOOOOOOOO.......After service I did a lot of informal witnessing on the bus en route to the market and on our way home.

I also do want to mention that my mom and I individually prayed about Christian and I asked for him to go to the meeting. I prayed that the texts we shared reach his heart. On our way to the Kingdom Hall I was wondering if he would be there. As I entered I was so glad to see that he was already there. Another brother who had met him a year ago had offered to sit with him and helped him get a seat. He had dressed for the occasion and I was very happy to see him. We didnt sit with him but I was sure the other brother would help him. I prayed that what he saw and heard would impact him in a good way.

After the meeting I approached him and I could see how he was just taking it all in. Everyone was being so friendly with him and some would small talk with him. He said he thought the information was all good and that he liked the way the audience participated. The school was something he also enjoyed, since it showed how two people can share similar thoughts about the Bible. It was a new experience for him but he liked it. He also liked the wasy we spoke to him in such a comfortable way. I read John 13:35 to him, because I thought it would explain better why we all treat eachother the way we do. I told him this happens everywhere. World wide. The other brother who had helped him  named Alfredo told him that we also all are Bible teachers and do it becasue we want to. He was amazed. He asked about the Saturday meeting and I gave him a copy for the WT study. I read the summary in the intro and invited him again. He liked the title on betrayal.

Well, that was the experience of the week! I pray that he continues to come to the meetings. Im excited.
So far, I see that he is Honest, Hungry for spiritual truth and Humble about learning. HOPE SO!!!

My little brother also started a study with Alfredo this morning. He is going out in service a lot. My brother is starting to take the bus on his own from the territory home. He of course, loves it. Im glad...he's becoming a little pioneer!

My aunt is helping out the Quichua congregation and learning the language. She has been able to start conversations with some indigenous speakers. Im happy for her.

Sunday we went to the morning session of the Circuit Assembly and then went to the English group meeting in the afternoon. After the meeting we went to the beach with the young ones who went from Muey. It was soo fun playing Soccer. Then we ran into the water and walked a bit on the Malecon. It was great getting to know other young ones. We also had empanandas with GUACAMOLE!!! SO YUMMY..

Well, thats it for now!!!

In GYE

I will be in Guayaquil this weekend staying with some cousins in Capeira. It is like a "fraccionamento" in the outskirts of Guayaquil. Not sure what is going to happen, but will take pictures! Hope youre all good!
